Arcaverde: Our olive groves

Our land consists of approximately 15 hectares located in the hills of the township of Cerchiara di Calabria, at an average altitude of 600 meters, and looks out toward the Ionian Sea.
All of our land is inside a national park (the Parco Nazionale del Pollino), and not all of it is planted with olive trees.
A great deal of our land is left in its natural state in order to conserve the trees and plants native to this area (oak, holm oak, mountain maple, tamarisk, Mediterranean pistachio and myrtle).
In fact, we promote a model of agriculture which prioritizes quality and sustainability, and in particular, we pay a great deal of attention to the idea of preserving the landscape, which even today determines the cultural and geo-morphological identity of our region. The different types of organic oil produced on our land are made from old local olive cultivars: Spezzanese, Grossa di Cassano, Tondina, Olivella Cerchianese, Dolce di Cerchiara. Today, unfortunately, these cultivars have lost ground to those from other regions, due to the fact that local nurseries have promoted certain cultivars which enjoy regional subsidizes.

It is our intention to keep alive the indigenous cultivars, and thus to make the same kind of extra virgin olive oil that our ancestors produced. This oil is an integral part of our cultural and gastronomical patrimony, and by keeping it alive, we hope to spread knowledge of the history and traditions of the Calabrian High Ionian and of the Cerchiara area in particular.
